AN INTRODUCTION TO TV DOCUMENTARY MAKING

A practical course which incorporates exercises in planning, shooting and editing documentaries

Diana Muir is an experienced journalist, TV producer, director and series producer. She joined the UK’s
award-winning ITV documentary team where she worked on long form documentaries on national and
international topics, as well as making observational documentaries, popular current affairs, consumer journalism
and investigative journalism. Diana also makes programes for the BBC, Sky and Discovery and is an experienced trainer who works with the Thomson Foundation.

This course is an introduction to documentary programme making which covers:

  • what makes a good documentary idea
  • research skills
  • telling the story through pictures
  • how to shoot and edit a sequence
  • how to interview for the documentary
  • writing narration
  • preparing for a shoot
  • preparing for the edit
  • working and communicating as a crew

As a final exercise, participants work in teams to create short films.
